Lutherville Volunteer Fire Department To Receive Critical New Equipment Upgrades
LUTHERVILLE, MD (June 4, 2009) – Budget constraints, which have been made worse by the recent economic downturn, are forcing fire departments across the country to scale back on buying essential equipment. But now, thanks to a $15,856 grant being awarded by All Risks, Ltd. and Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Department will be able to purchase essential equipment to strengthen its firefighting capabilities.
Grant funds will be used to upgrade the department’s fire hose and nozzles, most of which are outdated, on all three fire engines. Current 1 ½" hose will be replaced by 1 ¾" hose, with each attack line receiving a new nozzle. By standardization this equipment, the engine pump operator will no longer have to adjust water pressure during fires, helping to create a more consistent water flow during these operations.
"The standardization of this new equipment will enhance the safety of our firefighting crews and ultimately allow us to do our jobs more effectively and efficiently," said Lutherville Captain Stephen Weatherby.
Grant funds are also earmarked for remote area lighting that will provide an added safety measure for crews involved in nighttime emergency operations.
Weatherby will be joined by Lutherville firefighters and local officials, as executives from All Risks and Fireman’s Fund present the grant package:
Date & Time: Thurs., June 11, 2009, 11:00 a.m.
Location: Lutherville Vol. Fire Department, 1609 Bellona Avenue, Lutherville, MD
"We realize municipalities across the country are tightening budgets and, unfortunately, fire departments are being asked to do more with fewer resources," said Chris McGovern, senior vice president of All Risks. "I’m glad my brokerage firm is able to give back to the Lutherville community in a meaningful way."
The grant package is part of a nationwide philanthropic program funded by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. The program is designed to provide needed equipment, training and educational tools to local fire departments. Since 2004, Fireman’s Fund has issued grants to over 1,100 different departments totaling more than $22 million. Independent insurance brokers that sell Fireman’s Fund products, like All Risks, are able to direct these grants to support fire departments.
